The National Football League will increase measures against concussions suffered by players and will settle teams to receive advice from independent doctors while some of the team members are recovering for one of those injuries, said The New York Times.
Nowadays the league is allowing the franchises to decide trough their doctors and coaches when one of their members can play again after suffering a concussion building doubts about if there’s an interest conflict or not.
Scientific studies and other kind of evidences reveal a major risk of brain damage, dementia and cognitive impairment in former football players, and this is the reason why the league has faced strong critics by extreme experts.
The situation even got to the U. S. Congress where the NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, received strong attacks by the legislators who compared the football league with the cigarette industry. Goodell has said many times that policies used are safe but the one who make pressure in the subject decided to listen to public opinion.
League spokesman, Greg Aiello, didn’t give details about the new rules and that is why it’s unknown when the new decisions will come into effect or how the doctors are going to be paid.
“We want to give our players the best medical advice. This is an opportunity to expand that concept and to attract more people to the circle to make sure that we are taking the best decisions for them in a long term”, said Goodell in an interview with NBC.
The NFL has taken important steps about concussions. In 2007 it was settled that every player who suffered a severe blow to the head had to be tested many times before going back to the field. Besides, the ones who were injured in a game couldn’t come back to keep on playing. The shocks have been on the agenda this year. The case which drwas attention is the one about the Philadelphia Eagles runner, Brian Westbrook who suffered two concussions in less than a month. Westbrook has been out of activity for two weeks and is afraid about his career.
