NFL player Matt Leinart, who was officially released from the Arizona Cardinals last week, signed a one-year contract with the Houston Texans on Monday. The former Heisman Trophy winner and top 10 draft pick in 2006 was once expected to be the heir to Kurt Warner, had a disappointing performance during training camp and the preseason and the Cardinals decided Derek Anderson was a better option at quarterback.
Matt Leinart will finish his career with the Arizona Cardinals with not very good numbers: a 70.8 passer rating, a 57.1 percent completion percentage, and a 14:20 TD/INT ratio. Although he has been one of the major disappointments in recent NFL history, his career is far from over as shown by his contract with the Houston Texans.
In Houston, the former USC star will be part of a quarterback chart with Matt Schaub on top. Last NFL season, Schaub went to the Pro Bowl after completing 68% of his passes for 4,770 yards, 29 touchdowns and a 98.6 rating. Leinart will compete with veteran backup Dan Orlovsky for the second spot behind Schaub.
Leinart will start practicing with his new teammates on Wednesday, as the Houston Texans continue their preparations for Sunday’s football match against Indianapolis at Reliant Stadium. According to reports, Texans general manager Rick Smith and coach Gary Kubiak chose Leinart over John David Booty to join the practice NFL squad.
