Tennessee Titans Chris Johnson has been voted as the NFL offensive player of the year by the Associated Press. The running back set a league mark for 2,509 yards from scrimmage and became the sixth player to obtain a 2,000 yard rushing season.
In a season that couldn’t have been better for Johnson, he also was the first National Football League player to finish with at least 2,000 yards rushing and 500 receiving. Johnson got 38 and a half votes from a panel of 50 sportswriters and broadcasters. New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees ended in second place with a total of nine votes.
“I kind of realize what I did, and I feel like I had a dream season,” Johnson commented after he learned about the award. During the season, he scored 16 touchdowns and ended second in the list behind Minnesota Vikings Adrian Peterson. Johnson also tied the NFL record of six consecutive games rushing for at least 125 yards.
Johnson, who seems to be unstoppable, became the first player in the NFL to run for three TDs of 85 yards or longer in a season, something no football player had achieved before. Besides, he had the best month of any running back in the NFL history when he rushed for 800 yards in November.
Up until now, no NFL player has rushed for 2,000 yards twice in his career, but Tennessee Titans Coach Jeff Fisher says he has chances of doing it. “I think he's one player that has a chance to do it again,” Coach Fisher commented. “He's young. He's special. He has the potential to go the distance and change games and do those kinds of things.”
Chris Johnson played high school football the Olympia High School in Orlando, Florida, where he was born, until he broke his leg during his senior year. He emerged as a senior at East Carolina where he rushed for 2,960 all purpose yards and scored 24 touchdowns. In 2008 Johnson was drafted by the Titans 24th overall. He debuted as a professional with the Titans on September 7, 2008, playing in a season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
